Sarah Partanen successfully defended her doctoral thesis entitled “From clear skies and test tubes to cloudy days and deep waters: Studies on the simplifying assumptions in aquatic photochemistry”. Her work focused on improving the ability to accurately describe photochemical transformations that occur in the environment. This was accomplished by improving estimates of singlet oxygen-induced oxidations in aquatic systems, providing a global, temporally resolved set of correction factors to incident irradiance spectra to account for non-clear-sky conditions, and determining photolysis half-lives for a set of common aquatic contaminants in a field setting.
The defence was chaired by Prof. Jukka Jokela from D-USYS, and the defence committee consisted of Dr. Elisabeth Janssen (Eawag), Prof. Dr. Julian Fairey (University of Arkansas), and Prof. Dr. Kristopher McNeill (ETH, D-USYS). Following the defence an apéro was held that included homemade pizzas made on the roof of CHN, some fun games, and the presentation of the PhD hat.
